The Purpose of ABP
Whenever uncertainty exists regarding the diagnosis
of hypertension, whether the patient claims to have a
"white coat syndrome", or whether the patients office BP
recording always hovers in the 138-145/88-95 range, the
use of an Ambulatory BP Monitor will be of great
assistance. Worn like a Holter monitor, this compact,
solid state box is attached to a BP cuff on the
patient's arm for 24 to 48 hours. Every 15 minutes
throughout waking hours, and every 30 minutes during
sleep, the cuff automatically inflates and the patient's
BP and pulse rate are recorded in the unit's memory.
when the device is taken off, patient hemodynamic data
is downloaded into a computer, and a printout of all
individual timed readings, with means and standard
deviations is obtained.
