What is a Holter Monitor Test?
A Holter monitor continuously records your heart
rhythm, usually for 24 hours, while you go about your
usual daily activities. It is especially useful in
diagnosing abnormal heart rhythms.
What can I expect during the
test?
Several small adhesive electrodes will be placed on
your chest to pick up the heart's electrical signal.
Wires run from the electrodes to a small box (the size
of a paperback book) that contains a portable tape
recorder (this is the monitor). The recorder may be worn
suspended from a shoulder strap or attached to a belt.
Your physician will arrange for you to have a Holter
monitor hooked up at their office or at MSO. Please
bring a current list of your medications with you at the
time of your appointment.
You will also be asked to keep a diary of your
regular daily activities while you are wearing the
monitor. It is especially important to write down the
times of your activities, any symptoms that may occur
and the times that you take your medications.
After wearing the Holter monitor for 24 hours, you
will be instructed when to remove the monitor and to
return everything to the location where you were given
the monitor.
Restrictions during the test
Do not get the electrodes, wires, or recorder wet. Do
not swim, take a bath, or shower while wearing the
recorder.
You should avoid electric blankets, because the
signal from it may affect the recording.
What can I expect after the
test?
Your physician will explain the results of the test
to you after receiving the report from our lab which
reviews the tape. The reports should be sent to your
physician within a few days after you return the Holter
monitor.
